Losing one’s hair can be devastating to both a patient’s appearance and self-esteem. In the last 10 years, hair restoration has undergone major advances. No longer does hair transplantation result in the obvious and unattractive “corn-row” appearance but rather results are indistinguishable from naturally growing hair.

At the Center for Hair Restoration at Potomac Facial Plastics, Dr. Dahiya’s success rate for hair restoration is 95 percent. This means that 95 percent of the hairs he restores will grow.

Dr. Dahiya’s method uses the principle that a balding man or woman will continue to lose hair. Accordingly, Dr. Dahiya plans the hairline so that it will last a lifetime and continue to look natural even if hair loss progresses. Also single hair grafts are placed throughout the front of the hairline in a slightly irregular pattern so that no one can identify a difference between the new hairline and a naturally occurring one.

Dr. Dahiya is personally involved in every procedure and works with technical assistants he personally trained. And because Dr. Dahiya focuses on the face, he has the aesthetic experience to plan hair restoration so that it looks natural and individualized. Dr. Dahiya combines his hair restoration method with medical therapy, as well as the use of special shampoos and topical creams to ensure the hair continues to grow in a healthy and natural pattern.

With the use of mini- and micrografts (also known as follicular units) Dr. Dahiya restores a more youthful hairline that looks completely natural. This same technique can be used to add volume to thinning hair in women. In the field of hair transplantation, we distinguish between two techniques, FUT and FUE. The main difference between the two lies in the way the follicle units are extracted. In an FUT, the strip technique is used, by which a strip of the scalp with hairs on it is taken from the back of the head, with its hair follicles subsequently being extracted. Using FUE, individual follicular units are extracted directly from the scalp.

Though there has been considerable debate regarding which is the best procedure, Dr. Dahiya feels that both are excellent options and which is better for a given patient is dependent on the individual’s hairline, age, and overall aesthetic goals of hair restoration. A consultation in person is the ideal way to determine which is the best option for you. For patients from outside the country or general Washington DC vicinity, a virtual consultation can be arranged. Hair restoration can be performed in our office and is generally very well tolerated.

Swelling is certainly expected after surgery. The amount of swelling varies from person to person of course. Some patients have very little swelling and others can have substantial swelling the first 3-4 days. Typically at the end of a week the swelling is reduced enough that other people will not notice.

The actual growth of the hairs is delayed. The process can be thought of like planting seeds or bulbs for flowers and plants. There is a several month hibernation of the grafts and then they come out over the course of several months. This slow transition can actually make the change in your hairline much less obvious to others as it is not an abrupt change.

Dr. Dahiya and staff will see you numerous times after the procedure to make sure that you are happy with your results.
